Design and Technology

Intent

We aim for our children to develop their technical and practical expertise in cooking and nutrition, mechanical systems, textiles, electrical systems, structures and the digital world.  The children will have opportunities to design, make and evaluate products.  We will challenge them to solve real problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and the needs of others.

Implementation

  • Use of Kapow Primary to structure planning
  • Planning to include practical opportunities and chances for evaluation
  • Knowledge organisers accessible to each pupil for every topic that build on knowledge from previous years
  • D&T to be taught in alternating Stem/Arts weeks.  Teachers use Rosenshine’s principles of instruction and fluent recall
  • Children taught in mixed ability groups
  • Planning to include pre task and end of unit assessment
  • Risk assessment guidance available for teachers

Impact

Children:

  • Learn how to take risks
  • Become resourceful, innovative and enterprising
  • Able to select appropriate tools and use them safely
  • Understand the principles of nutrition and how to cook and prepare selected food
  • Solve problems both as individuals and as members of a team
  • Make links to other disciplines such as mathematics, science and computing
  • Improved ability to collaborate
